When it rained, it poured… Harmony had learned that long ago. Still, she couldn’t believe the curveball life was throwing at her now. She’d been through enough shit. Just when she thought she was making progress by meeting someone special and busting her ass doing double shifts, something had to go wrong.

“This can’t be right,” Harmony spoke to her boss on the verge of tears as she stared down at her current check stub. She was expecting a decent paycheck that Friday due to working overtime every other day. She woke up ecstatic to get her check and go cash it at Walmart. However, she noticed from the stub she wasn’t receiving a dime of her money. She stood in front of Mr. Bernie demanding answers. She had shit to pay and had no time to play games.

“It’s right, Harmony. The IRS notified me to garnish your wages. Have you tried speaking with them? Normally, they send notices to your last known address before going this route.” Mr. Bernie said while looking over his thick eyeglasses. “I’m afraid there’s nothing I can do. Here, this is the letter they sent me.”

Harmony’s eyes became glossy as her entire world came crashing down. Her shivering hands held the IRS letter tightly and her eyes roamed wildly over the words, praying she’d read the notice wrong.

“N… no! I can’t have this right now. Mr. Bernie, I need my money. You have no idea what will happen if I don’t get paid. I’m already going through a tough time, and you know I have my younger sister who depends on me. Can you please just give me a cash advance? I’ll work more overtime to pay it off.” Harmony begged.

“The letter says th—”

“Fuck the letter! I know what it says. I’m asking you to please help me out by paying me under the table.” Tears fell from Harmony’s eyes as her lips quivered. She stood terrified of not being able to pay her bills for the month. The thought of not having money to put food on her table caused her heart to beat rapidly.

Another thing that worried her was that her rent was due again. She was already a couple of days late, but her landlord was willing to work with her because he knew her pay dates. As long as she included his late fees, he was fine. Harmony couldn’t stand her boss, but she had no problem begging him for the sake of her livelihood.

“Please!” She paced the floor back and forth.

Mr. Bernie removed his thick bifocals and sat back in his chair, relaxing his shoulders. “Close the door, Ms. Bellamy.” He instructed Harmony.

After Harmony hesitantly shut the office door, her eyes slowly met Mr. Bernie’s and a chilling feeling consumed her. The look on his face made her cringe. His eyes danced over Harmony’s petite frame. The young black girl was a fetish for the old man and because she was in distress, he was going to use that to his advantage.
